"From Striving to Arriving"
We have two potentialities living within us. The first is
“ego” or personality. The ego is demanding, pushy,
obsessed with being right and is always in search of
more. It never seems to be satisfied. The “EGO”
keeps us so preoccupied that it can Edge God Out of
our experience. The second potentiality within us is
“Spirit”. Spirit is totally uninterested in the things that
fascinate the ego. The Spirit within us only wants to
express love and experience the power that comes
from loving and living the truth.

For us to become the clearest possible expressions of
Spirit we must move from Striving to Arriving. To do
so the ego must yield to the Spirit within us. In order
to make this shift in our consciousness we need to
become aware of ego’s activity and influence in our
life.

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, then
your ego may be lurking in there waiting to be
transformed.
1.        Do you confront and argue with others?
2.        Do you compete and compare yourself with
others?
3.        Do you find yourself chasing after others and
striving to be first?
4.        Do you worry a lot?
5.        Do you have a need to accumulating and
acquire stuff?
6.        Are you constantly chattering to yourself to
stay busy?
7.        Do you rejoice in the troubles of others?

This “ego-talk” may be familiar and scary, but the
good news is that it allows us to corner the ego and
clearly identify it so that we can then “take it out of the
game” and substitute Spirit for it. That is not always an
easy task, for ego has been with us since childhood,
and in some cases, has served us well. In any case, it
has always been loud, and demanding our attention.

Spirit, on the other hand, has been quiet, waiting for
us to take notice, to turn our awareness its way. Here
at Unity on Maui we talk about raising our
consciousness -- that is, becoming more open to
Spirit in our lives.

Here are four practices that you can use to move
Spirit into a more dominant position in your life.

One: Listen to your heart before you react to anyone.
Ask yourself, “Is what I am about to say trying to
make someone wrong and make myself special? Will
I create more turmoil or more serenity?” Try to
subdue your ego by being kind and loving, then notice
how your ego reacts. Keep at it each day until it
becomes a habit. When you do, you have raised your
consciousness to a new, more Spirit-filled level.

Two: Listen to how frequently you use the word “I” in
conversation, and see if you can let the majority of
your sentences being with “you” or “we” instead.
Notice and verbally applaud the accomplishments of
others, rather than always talking about yourself.

Three: Work at being less attached to your “stuff”.
Give some of it away, and watch how your ego
reacts. The spiritual principle of giving helps retrain the
ego and allows the peace that you desire.

Four: Talk to your ego. Speak from your highest self,
your “Sacred Self”. Make sure your ego knows that
you know where it is hiding. Keep the light of Spirit
focused on it.

Affirm: “I love you. I listen with my heart. I let go and
I let God. I have arrived.”
